Our Creation Process
At the center if Niik is the slow, handmade process of clay. We make each piece by hand in our northern Michigan studio, just a stones throw from the shores of Lake Superior. Patience and a delicate attention to detail are a core part of the rhythm of making and firing work at our space.
Each piece is designed by hand from our artist team, and we use a number of construction methods including porcelain slip-casting, hand building, and wheel throwing to create our vessels.
Most pieces are made out of porcelain, which is a translucent, very fine clay body that fires elegantly white and is silky smooth to the touch. We purchase our clay from US based companies and mix our porcelain slips in house.
From start to finish, a piece can take anywhere from one to two weeks depending on where we are in our firing process. Once the vessels are made, each piece is finished by hand to produce our signature satin surface. Some pieces are glazed and fired up to three times to achieve the rich colors and depth on our dinnerware.
We are constantly experimenting with new designs, processes, and finishes on our products, which makes the creation a living, breathing process. Our collection is often expanded by special requests from clients or inspired inklings from long walks in nature.
Clay is a slow process, requiring our team to be present and dedicated to showing up each day, but it is within the meditation of creation that our vision for authentic living comes to life.
It begins when our hands touch clay, and continues long after the pieces have found their new home in the world.

Meet the Makers
Niikah Hatfield was born and raised in the Marquette area, and began Niik in 2020 after graduating from the ceramics program at Northern Michigan University. Amidst navigating a changing a world so unlike she had imagined post grad life to be, she returned to the backbone of her artistic journey since being a young child growing up on a farm: a deep love of nature, a big emphasis handcrafted living, and the importance of self-care and good food.
She purchased the studio, originally known as Revision's Design Studio, from Michele Dupras during the height of the pandemic and began to weave her own vision into the space with a passion that spoke volumes of her love for a meaningful life.
In 2023, she met Lea Rudzena, who joined as a studio assistant and quickly became a core part of the team. Together, Niikah & Lea worked to create an entire dinnerware line and expand the lighting collections.
Since then, their work has been shown in ArtPrize, has been installed in local breweries and hotels, and has graced the homes of clients around the world. Niikah & Lea continue crafting new designs and dreaming of new possibilities for their studio and boutique.
